Mainely Physics Roadshow

The University of Maine
Department of Physics and Astronomy

Title Banner - Mainely Physics Road Show 2007-2008 with pocket watches to replace zeroes

"It's Time for Physics!"

Einstein's Longines pocket watch"...Einstein's Longines pocket watch is an eloquent reminder that with his theory of relativity, Einstein changed forever our perception of the nature of Time."

Thanks to Europastar for the pocket watch image.

We invite you to invite us! Let us visit your school or civic group (at no charge) where we will put on an exciting and informative hour-long show tailored to your students!

If it's more convenient, come to Orono!  You can combine your visit with a trip to the M.F. Jordan Planetarium, the Page Farm and Home Museum, or any number of other great things to do on the UMaine Campus. Also available close by is the Cole Land Transportation Museum, the Challenger Learning Center of Maine, or the Maine Discovery Museum.

Miraculous Year

Cover of Time Magazine with a picture of Einstein - 'Person of the Century' Einstein wrote three fundamental papers, all in a few months. The first paper claimed that light must sometimes behave like a stream of particles with discrete energies, "quanta." The second paper offered an experimental test for the theory of heat. The third paper addressed a central puzzle for physicists of the day about the connection between electromagnetic theory and ordinary motion, and solved it using the "principle of relativity."

"I want to know how God created this world. I am not interested in this or that phenomenon, in the spectrum of this or that element. I want to know His thoughts; the rest are details." - Albert Einstein
