Organic Molecules on Silicon Surfaces: From Single Molecules to Devices

Controlled attachment of organic molecules to silicon surfaces offers the promise of enabling a new class of molecular electronic devices and sensors with the potential to significantly enhance the functionality of conventional microelectronic devices. We are exploring both gas phase and wet chemical approaches for covalent attachment of molecules to hydrogen terminated silicon surfaces. These modified surfaces are investigated with a range of surface science techniques including scanning tunneling microscopy and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy. We will describe our studies aimed both at understanding the fundamental mechanisms of these modification reactions as well as probing the chemical and electronic properties of these hybrid organic/silicon systems. The use of these surfaces in molecular scale electronics and chemical/biomolecular sensing applications will also be discussed.
